Setting
In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, there are two modern settings. Junior lives on a reservation (the Rez) but goes to school elsewhere (Reardan). These two places are a big part of Junior’s life, but are completely different. The distance between the two is so long that Junior has trouble getting to school. Each place has its own type of people. Indians (Native Americans) live on the Rez and at Reardan, they are all Caucasian. Junior said that the Native Americans have “a vanishing past”, a “bone crushing reality” and are very poor in the novel. He also said that the people in the Reardan community have a “bright future”, “hope”, “positive role models” and are rich. Due to the different type of people, the atmosphere is different. The appearance is not as nice as Reardan because of their poverty. Some things are similar though. Like how they are both in Washington and how each has its good and bad sides about it, as Junior learns.
